How to help someone thinking of suicide

You can help someone who is suicidal:
  • Remain non-judgmental
  • Listen to the person experiencing these feelings
  • Give the person your full attention
  • Take any suicide threat seriously
  • If you are unsure someone is thinking of suicide, ask them. If you don’t feel comfortable, find someone who can ask.
  • Do not keep someone’s thought of suicide a secret, reach out for help
  • Help refer the person to appropriate resources both on and off  campus
Signs that someone may be suicidal:
  • Threats of suicide
  • Loss of interest in favourite activities
  • Statements like: “I can’t take this anymore”
  • Giving away possessions
  • Extreme behaviour changes
  • Disturbed sleep, physical health complaints
  • Feelings of depression, hopelessness, sadness, anger
